Cardiovascular clinical trials and research studies

What is the cardiovascular system and cardiovascular disease?

The cardiovascular system is like a transport apparatus for the body and comprises the heart, blood vessels (such as veins and arteries), and blood. The heart pumps blood — carrying essential elements such as nutrients, hormones, and oxygen — through the blood vessels to all areas of the body.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the term for a group of disorders of both the heart and circulatory system. Common CVD conditions include coronary heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. There are a number of risk factors for developing coronary heart disease and stroke including genetics/family history of CVD, hypertension (high blood pressure), and lifestyle factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and poor diet. Heart failure is where the heart is not able to pump enough blood around the body and is usually caused by damage to the heart from another condition.

Cardiovascular diseases are growing in prevalence across the globe and predominantly affect older people. However, young people can still be impacted and understanding how cardiovascular diseases develop is essential to help reduce the burden of these diseases.

Where is cardiovascular disease research now?

Cardiovascular disease research is a global research priority with studies into the development, prevention, progression, diagnosis, and treatment of these diseases being conducted in many countries. Notably, considering the complexity of cardiovascular disease, lifestage interventions such as changes to diet and exercise are of particular interest to researchers. As this field advances, more and more sophisticated medical devices and drugs are being made available to patients.

How can I get involved in cardiovascular disease research?

Getting involved in cardiovascular research and clinical trials may be a part of your recovery plan, or it may help pave the way in developing new diagnostics and therapies that will benefit others. There are a large number of clinical trials and research studies undertaken each year to understand, prevent, and treat different types of cardiovascular disease.
