What is mental health?

The term ‘mental health’ is used to describe emotional, psychological and social well-being, and is commonly used in the context of wellness and general good health. There are many factors that can affect our mental health including lifestyle (eg. diet, stress and exercise), and some diseases and conditions. Mental illness, or ‘mental health conditions’ are characterised by symptoms that can affect a person's thinking, perception, mood or behaviour. Examples of these conditions include depression, anxiety disorders, addictions, eating disorders and schizophrenia. Development of mental health conditions can be complex, and the reasons some people develop these conditions is not well understood.

Living with mental illness can be challenging, with some people finding it difficult to work, form relationships, and perform general daily tasks. Management strategies for these conditions are used to help reduce the symptoms and challenges in day-to-day tasks. These may include medications, counselling, and lifestyle changes involving exercise, diets and stress management.

Where is mental health research now?

Extensive research is being conducted into improving mental health and wellness, and also the causes, prevention and treatment of mental illness. Poor mental health and mental health conditions contribute significantly to disease burden around the globe and so understanding causes and developing more effective treatment options are of paramount importance.

How can I get involved in mental health research?

Getting involved in research and clinical trials regarding mental health may be a part of your prevention or management plan, or it may help pave the way in developing new management interventions or therapies that will benefit others. There are a large number of clinical trials and research studies undertaken each year to understand, manage and treat mental health conditions, and factors affecting mental health.
